Askiz In Bloom 2009

The Askiz District was founded in 1924.   Its territory is over 7,500 sq kms, its population exceeds 43,000,000.   There are 58 villages and settlements in the District, its centre being the village of Askiz, which was established in 1771. 

 The Askiz District has a special place in the history of Khakasia.  The many archaeological monuments found here date from different historical periods.  There is a great concentration of ancient burial mounds, monuments, cave paintings, the remains old mines, canals, etc.

 The nature of the District is unique, it’s climatic and vegetation zones are diverse, there are high mountains with snow covered peaks, caves, vast forests, steppes, picturesque lakes and abundant mineral deposits.  The District has a continental climate with a cold winter and short summer. 

From 2002 the main industry of the district was the mining and processing of non-ferrous metals.
